Map Distance Meter app for iPhone and iPad
Developer: Marko Peharda
First release : 10 Dec 2012
App size: 7.65 Mb
Map Distance Meter allows you to measure the length of a path on the map.
Create the path by tapping the map. Different modes of path creating are available: direct, driving, walking and bicycling. Direct mode draws straight lines between points. Driving, walking and bicycling modes are able to find and follow roads between points. Driving mode finds routes using the roads network. Walking mode uses pedestrian paths and sidewalks (where available). Bicycle mode uses bicycle tracks and preferred streets (this is currently available only in US). Distance between first and last point is shown on the top of the screen.
Choose between metric and imperial distance units.

Perfect for measuring distances, very useful! Love it!
Crashes too much and deletes route. Please fix ASAP!
This jewel accurately draws the route via roads, trails, streets or other true paths and you see it live via satellite in real time! Enjoy!
Ive been looking for a distance calculator to plan my runs. All of the other apps Ive tried do straight line approximations and to get something halfway accurate, you need to drop a pin at every curve. This one follows paths. So only a few pins are needed. My only wish is that it had a hybrid mode where for a part of the path, you can specify point to point. In rare instances, the path isnt obvious and the app gets confused and takes a really long route instead of a direct shortcut.
When the app opens it shows the Atlantic and much of Europe. Why not let it open over my home location. An easy fix. As Nike says, "Just do it!". While they are at it, allow a few more pins instead of just 7. But for these shortfalls, Id give it a 4 or 5.
